The book begins at the story of Sarah Starzynski in July of 1942.  She is at home, in bed, when there is a pounding at the door and the threatening call of a man yelling, “Police!”.  Sarah recalls her parents secret whisperings, thinks of her father who is hiding in the cellar, and she can't help but be afraid.  At ten years old, she doesn't understand what is happening, but she knows that nothing good could become of it.  She never imagined, however, that she would be one of the children victimized in the infamous Vel' D'Hiv' roundup, where her own trusted policemen and neighbours...
